How To Breed Beta Fish (Part 3)
Now that we've learnt how to setup our beta fish tank for breeding and we've picked out our fish it is time to introduce the male and the female.
When you first introduce the female beta fish to the male beta fish it is not uncommon for the male to chase her around for a while. Be prepared to see a couple of torn fins and a bit of rough play between the two.
When the male and female become accustomed to each other the male beta fish will wrap himself around he female beta fish in order to encourage her to release her eggs. This act may take place a number of times. When the male begins to chase the female beta fish away from the bubble nest you know the spawning is over and it is time to REMOVE the female. If the female beta fish is not removed the male beta will kill her.
When learning how to breed beta fish it is a good idea at this stage to add a little Malachite green to the tank. This will ensure the eggs remain free from fungus. It is also a good idea to add some Malachite green to the female's tank or bowel to avoid a fungal infection on her fins as well.
You will notice the male spending almost all of his time watching over the eggs. During the first days the male may refuse to eat or eat very little.
It is a good idea to cut back his rations a little if you notice this. In about 24-36 hours the beta fry will begin to hatch. 24 hours later you can begin to feed them. Beta fry love to eat baby brine shrimp or micro worms.
The new born fry will need to be fed 4-5 times per day. As well you will need to change their water 2- 3 times a week to ensure the tank remains clean. When the beta fry beginning swimming around on their own you should remove the male beta fish from the beta tank.
Finally the fry are able to eat adult beta food. You will soon be able to distinguish the males from the females and when they are old enough you can begin breeding again.
